Welcome
If you arrived here through Omgaanmetgeluid.nl or earlier work around sound sensitivity and misophonia, welcome.
That work still continues, although in a quieter and more personal form through Studio20 and one-on-one support sessions.
Over time, I felt drawn toward creating less noise, fewer platforms, and more meaningful connection.
What is Misophonia?
Selective Sound Sensitivity, also known as misophonia, is a strong emotional and nervous system reaction to specific sounds.
Certain sounds may trigger stress, irritation, panic, overwhelm, or fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses, even when there is no actual danger in the present moment.
One way I often describe it is as a triangle between:
Person → Event → Sound
At some point in the past, the nervous system may have linked a stressful, overwhelming, unsafe, or emotionally charged experience to certain sounds that were present during that moment.
Over time, the sound itself can become the trigger.
Even when the original situation is no longer happening, the body may still respond as if it is.
This is sometimes understood as a conditioned nervous system response. The reaction is often not a conscious choice, but an automatic survival response from a system that learned to stay alert and protective.
Rather than seeing sound sensitivity as something “wrong” with a person, I see it as a nervous system asking for more safety, understanding, calm, and support.
My Personal Experience
I speak from lived experience. I am highly sensitive myself and deal with misophonia on a daily basis.
Along the way, I explored different therapies, perspectives, and ways of understanding what was happening in my system. Slowly, I began to see that the reaction was often not really about the sound itself, but about what the nervous system had learned to associate with stress, pressure, tension, or emotional overwhelm.
This understanding changed the way I relate to sound sensitivity, both personally and in the way I support others.
Studio20
Studio20 is now the home for my creative work, reflections, coaching, yoga, and personal guidance.
My work is shaped through lived experience, self-study, nervous system awareness, coaching, and my background as a trained yoga teacher and coach.
While I am not a trauma-informed therapist or licensed healthcare professional, I work with great care, sensitivity, and awareness around the nervous system and the impact stress, overwhelm, and conditioning can have on the body and daily life.
It’s a softer and more spacious approach where reflection, grounding, movement, awareness, and personal guidance gently come together over time.
1:1 Support Sessions
I offer one-on-one sessions online, in Amsterdam, and on Mallorca.
These sessions are designed for people dealing with sound sensitivity, sensory overwhelm, stress, or nervous system exhaustion who long for more calm, grounding, and breathing space in daily life.
Together we slow down, reflect, and gently explore what may help support your system.
A small note
As a highly sensitive person with sound sensitivity myself, I’ve learned how important it is to live and work in a way that feels more spacious, calm, and true.
This shift from Omgaanmetgeluid.nl into Studio20 came from that place too.
Thank you for being here and for following along, whether you’ve been here from the beginning or just arrived.
With care,
Marianne de Kuyper
